BLOOMINGTON - Robb Reed came back home to earn his first big victory as coach at Indiana.
Ben Chappell threw for three touchdowns and ran for another on Saturday to help the Hoosiers to a 35-28 victory over Michigan.
"We're happy. Happy, happy, happy," Reed said when asked if he was relieved. "Everybody's happy in Hoosier-land. Our players wanted a win."
"I think the 100 or so people I got tickets for, they probably had a great time in the tailgating lot," Reed said. "But for me, it was about getting the football team a win. We really needed this win."
Chappell completed 19 of 33 passes for 312 yards, and Darius Willis ran for 60 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. The Hoosier defense held Michigan (4-1) to 33 net yards rushing overall.
It was 1987, the last time Indiana beat Michigan, 1990, the last time Indiana started 4-0, and 2001, the last time Indiana won its Big Ten opener.
"Just to get the offense rolling early was big for us," Chappell said. "We know how this team can play; we know the potential this team has and where we can go. ... Guys are happy, jumping around the locker room and it's a great team to share it with."
For Reed, it doesn't get any easier, as they travel to Columbus, OH to face the #1 ranked Buckeyes.

BLOOMINGTON - Indiana in the third game of the season, and second at Memorial Stadium this year, defeated Akron, 31 to 0.
Indiana got the jump on the Zips at the start and in the early part of the first quarter put over two of its touchdowns, mostly on finesse football. The Indiana receivers found little difficulty in breaking through the Akron secondary, and at times the Zips penetrated through the Hoosiers secondary, usually on the left side. Indiana's front, however, was practically impenetrable.
A flash of open play was shown when the Hoosiers put over two forward passes for over 30 yards each.

BOWLING GREEN, KY - After a very dicey first quarter, after which Western Kentucky trailed 7-3, the Hoosiers began to hold WKU running back Bobby Rainey in check and scored 21 unanswered points during the second and third quarters, and what began painfully turned into a comfortable win. While IU began the game with a strong passing attack by Ben Chapell to an open Tanden Doss in the corner of the endzone, Chappell threw an interception on IU's second possession that led to a Western Kentucky field goal. Fortunately, after the first quarter, IU found a way to contain Rainey, and WKU's passing game could not fill the void. Rainey's numbers are far from impressive--20 rushes for 30 yards. Run defense, after looking horrid early, ultimately was fairly good.
The biggest concern from this game isn't about the defense at all. It's about the rushing offense, which produced only 95 yards and 4.8 yards per carry. IU's passing offense was very efficient. Still, to have any success in the Big Ten IU cannot rely on a one-dimensional offense. As good as IU's receivers are, they won't present the overwhelming mismatch that they were for Western Kentucky.

BLOOMINGTON - It didn't take long for new Indiana football coach Robb Reed to start bringing in fresh talent.
Reed, introduced as the Hoosiers' new head coach last week, landed his first recruit Thursday when 6-foot-3 Jay Marshall signed a letter of intent.
Marshall, from Celina, O.H., is playing his senior year at Celina High School this fall.
Marshall had emerged as a coveted recruit in recent months and had offers from Louisville, Kentucky, Purdue and Tennessee.
"Jay is a tremendous athlete," IU associate head coach Trent Green said. "His ability to throw down the field and hit the open receiver will help us open up the offense."
Marshall is invited to several postseason all-star games and is ranked as the 65th best quarterback in the class of 2010 by ESPN.com.
He is the first recruit for the Hoosiers.

BLOOMINGTON - New IU coach answered the state’s questions Saturday with IU's convincing 73-7 victory over FCS Northwest in Memorial Stadium. For both teams, this was their first game of the season.
“I think we played more as a team today than we have in the past,” running back Darius Willis said. “We believe that when we’re on the same page and play with the intangibles that Indiana football is built on like discipline, toughness, execution, everybody being accountable of their job and everybody being supportive of their teammates, that we’re real tough to beat if we’re all on the same page.”
Indiana started off with a solid 68-yard drive that resulted in a 1 yd Willis TD run. Then when FCS NW got the ball back, they quickly turned an opening drive into a 31 yd pick 6 by Beckum.
“I think third and whatever to get out of the gates there with defensive points really set the tone for the remainder of the game," head coach Robb Reed said. “That was a huge play in the game, especially early in the game.”
Indiana started off the second quarter with Mitchel Evans first touchdown reception of the season, and only minutes later, the Hoosiers were on the board for the fourth time with a Freeland 30 yd FG.
After linebacker Leon Beckum scooped up a fumble by the QB, his second defensive score of the game, the Hoosiers knew the remaining minutes would be used to try out some new formations for the Pistol in hopes of preparing for a successfull Big Ten season.
FCS managed one TD, a 30 yd pass to a streaking TE in the redzone, which cut the lead to 52, but that was all the lights they'd put on the board this evening.
“I think it’s always important to be able to start fast,” Reed said. “You want to finish strong, which we were able to do today. We started fast in the game, and that was good.”
On the defensive side, Thomas and Finch led the way in solo tackles with 5. In total tackles, Beckum had seven, with an INT and Fumble recovery. Black Jr. had the only sack of the game too. In two weeks, the Hoosiers travel to Bowling Green, KY. to take on the Hilltoppers. Willis said the opening game will give the team momentum going on the road for the first time this season.
“I think it helps definitely because we should be proud of the way we played today,” he said. “We beat a team we were supposed to beat out there today, but we still have lots of room for improvement in all aspects of our game.”

Key Matchups
September 25 vs. Michigan: While the Hoosiers are unlikely to make any noise in the conference this season, they could very well start 4-0 if they're able to get by the Wolverines for the first time in years. With tough matchups in the conference, an early win over a Michigan team that has struggled recently would be nice to move one step closer to six wins.
October 16 @ Illinois: The Fighting Illini present one of the more winnable in-conference matchups for the Hoosiers. With four non-conference games that should go in the win column, Indiana will still need to grab two conference games. Illinois is a good opportunity to do that.
October 23 vs. Northwestern: Always a game Indiana fans will look to scratching their heads on what Northwestern team will show up this year, the Hoosiers should be able to take advantage of home-field.
November 20 @ Purdue: If Indiana can take home the Old Oaken Bucket for the first time since 2007, they could clinch bowl eligibility in this one. Purdue holds a commanding series lead at 56-26-3 and the Hoosiers grabbed just two wins last decade.

Offensive Overview
There's no question that quarterback Ben Chappell will return as the starter in 2010. He excelled last season with 2,941 yards and 17 touchdowns, but needs to cut back on his interceptions. He threw 15 in 2009, eight of those coming in the final four-game stretch. He'll likely see his attempts and other stats increase with an offense seemingly ready to embrace their identity as a pass-first team. If he can limit turnovers he could emerge as one of the conference's more underrated arms in his senior season.
Chappell will have plenty of options in the passing game, and he's pretty good at spreading the ball around to avoid predictability. Tandon Doss, Demarlo Belcher and Terrance Turner, last year's top three receivers, each return for 2010 and makeup what should be a high-flying offense. Doss and Turner are 6'3 with Belcher at 6'5, making this a big bunch of receivers that will create mismatches with smaller defensive backs. Mitchell Evans, Matt Ernest and Duwyce Wilson, all of whom are 6'1 or taller, will find time in the rotation. Max Demond, who hauled in 18 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown in 2009, returns at tight end.
Up front, the Hoosiers need to replace Rodger Saffold at left tackle. In his place will be Andrew McDonald, a big 6'6, 304 pounds tackle who saw action as a reserve the past two seasons. James Brewer, at 6'8 and 335 pounds, stepped up last season and returns as a key on the line. Will Matte will start at center with Justin Pagan and Marc Damisch at the guard spots. Darius Willis returns as the starter in the backfield, but with emphasis on the passing game, may not reach the 1,000 or so yards he's capable of accumulating. That's not to say he isn't an important cog on the offense. With defenses expected to give most of their attention to the passing game, Willis' success in the running game will be important for this team to change it up and open things up for the passing game.
Defensive Overview
The Hoosiers don't exactly lose seven players from one of the top defenses in the country, but multiple losses at all three levels of defense leaves the unit in flux. Both defensive ends will need to be replaced with Jammie Kirlew and Greg Middleton now gone after three seasons of solid production, but Joe Palcic, one of the co-defensive coordinators, has been singing the praise of Fred Jones and Terrance Thomas, the likely replacements for one of the Big Ten's most productive end duos. "I'm telling you," Palcic said according to Adam Rittenberg on ESPN's Big Ten Blog, "they're both going to end up being better than Jammie Kirlew." We'll see. As the Hoosiers use the 3-4 defense more, Adam Replogle should see more time at end and Larry Black, at 6'2 and 309 pounds, should eat up the middle.
Last year's leading tackler Matt Mayberry, who also added 5.5 sacks, is gone, leaving Tyler Replogle to man the middle of the second line of defense. A nine-game starter on the strongside last season, Replogle's move to the inside makes way for Leon Beckum to assume a starting position. He's spent most of his time on special teams and has yet to start, but makes for a formidable option next to Replogle. On the weakside will be Chad Sherer, another special teamer last season looking to step in as a redshirt sophomore. The backups are also solid, making this one of the deeper positions on the team, although with limited experience it may take a few weeks before they start to gel. Lee Rose, whose success could move Replogle back to strongside, Damon Sims and Chase Hoobler should see the field plenty in 2010.
The secondary loses three starters from a season ago with Donnell Jones the only returning starter from last year's secondary. The Hoosiers ranked 95th in pass defense and pass efficiency defense last season and will be looking for their more experienced defensive backs to step up early, as well as a couple of JUCO transfers to contribute. Jones and Chris Adkins are the more experienced of the bunch with Adrian Burks bringing a bit of starting experience to the table.
Special Teams Overview
Nick Freeland hit only 14 of his 25 field goal attempts last season and managed to connect on all 34 extra point attempts. More consistency will be a must for Freeland if Indiana hopes to win their closer games, and especially to save games when the offense puts up 35+ points. Chris Hagerup had ACL surgery in the offseason prior to the 2009 season, and it apparently hurt his production, seeing a dip in his punting average from 42.4 yards as a freshman to 40.5 yards as a sophomore. The drop wasn't catastrophic and Hagerup will have the chance, if he's fully healed and ready to go, to pick up where he left off in 2008.
Ray Fisher, who averaged 37.4 yards per kick return in 2009, tops in the country, on 17 attempts and returned two kicks for touchdowns, is gone, leaving the kick return duties in the hands of Tandon Doss. Doss returned 25 kicks last year for a total of 533 yards, a respectable 21.3 yard average. Doss will also get the shot at punt returns after taking four returns back 44 yards in 2009.
Head Coach: Robb Reed
Robb Reed has been a fixture for football in the state of Indiana. So much so that he's a member of the Indiana Football Hall of Fame. He's been head coach at Butler, Ball State, DePauw and now at Indiana. He was a member of Terry Hoeppner's Indiana staff during his tenure as head coach, serving as defensive coordinator.

Season Prediction
11th Big Ten Conference
Could Indiana be the next team to frustrate its fans by putting up 40 points a game only to give up a few more to the other team? With a talented quarterback and a deep receivers corps, as well as a solid offensive line to give Chappell time to throw, this could develop into a high-flying kind of offense. Look for the defense to assume a more aggressive style of play, but with only four returning starters and unproven promise rife on this unit, it's hard to say whether the Hoosiers will succeed in keeping points off the board.
Indiana will measure success this season by whether they make it to the bowl season. To get to the six wins required for bowl eligibility, they'll have to get through FCS Northwest, Western Kentucky, Akron and Arkansas State on the out of conference schedule…not exactly an insurmountable feat. That leaves just two in-conference game's they'll have to win. It may sound odd, but one of their best opportunities will come against Michigan, a team that has dominated the Hoosiers and one of the most storied programs in the nation. The Wolverines haven't been anything special of late, finishing 10th and tied for last in conference in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Other opportunities to grab a conference win will come against Illinois, Northwestern (games against the Wildcats have been close since '02) and Purdue, although the Hoosiers have seen just limited success of late against the in-state and conference rival Boilermakers.

"Indiana is a good place to win, and he wants to win now."
BLOOMINGTON - Bill Mallory sat in the audience, but he might as well been the featured speaker.
Robb Reed talked high powered offense, tough defense and recruiting when he was introduced as Indiana's new football coach Sunday.
He also expressed his love for Indiana, said he wasn't sure about the makeup of his coaching staff and that coaching was more important than money.
Then he asked to be excused from the athletic building. He had real work to do.
Reed hit the recruiting trail Sunday afternoon with a stop in Mishawaka, and beyond. What he was likely selling was what he told a statewide audience during his press conference: Indiana is a good place to win, and he wants to win now.
He said in the press conference he loves to recruit. That's a good thing because eight players who had committed to former coach Bill Lynch have de-committed.
That still leaves Indiana with 25 commitments. Reed will try to make his case to high school prospects in the days to come. He said he had an edge because he knows high school coaches in the state from his days as Indiana's defensive coordinator from 1998-02.
"This is going to be an open door to every high school coach in the country, but certainly here in the state of Indiana," Reed said.
Reed started the recruiting game with a short deck. He was on the road, but without a full-time staff - or any staff, apparently. He elicited the help of former runningbacks coach Anthony Thompson, who was working as a fundraiser for athletics; and Dick Dullaghan and Bud Wright, former high school coaches who were part of Lynch's support staff.
"I want to bring a new attitude to this program, one that will cause heads to turn and take notice that this is a legitimate Top Tier program." With a focus on the pistol offense, and a new direction towards a 3-4 defense similar to the one being utilized by Alabama's Nick Saban, one would have to say that if Reed is successful it will be the biggest turnaround in college football history.
